Alright, let’s talk about that Canelo vs Charlo fight. I remember hearing the buzz building up for weeks, you know? Canelo, the undisputed king at 168, against Charlo, the undisputed champ at 154, jumping up two whole weight classes. Sounded crazy interesting, so I decided I wasn’t just gonna catch the highlights later, I was gonna properly get into it.

Getting Ready for Fight Night

First thing I did was some homework. I wasn’t totally clueless, but I wanted to refresh my memory. So, I started digging:

  • Looked up their records again: Canelo’s long list of wars and wins, Charlo’s path to becoming undisputed lower down.
  • Watched old fights: Spent a good afternoon watching Canelo’s power punches and bodywork, then switched to Charlo’s sharp jabs and movement from his fights at 154. Big difference in styles and, obviously, the size of opponents they usually face.
  • Talked trash (friendly, mostly): Got into it with a few buddies. Some were all-in on Canelo being too strong, too experienced at the weight. Others thought Charlo’s speed and skill might surprise everyone. I leaned towards Canelo, honestly. That jump in weight felt like too much for Charlo against this guy.
  • Figured out the logistics: Made sure I knew where it was showing and what time. Didn’t want any last-minute scrambling. Cleared my Saturday night schedule – no interruptions allowed! Got the snacks and drinks sorted beforehand. You gotta have fight night snacks, right?

Watching It Go Down

So, fight night rolls around. I got comfy on the couch, ready to go. The build-up was intense, the ring walks, all that stuff gets you hyped. Then the bell rang.

From the get-go, you could kinda see how it might play out. Canelo was just… solid. Like a rock in there. He was constantly pressing forward, cutting off the ring. Charlo was moving, trying to use his jab, but he didn’t seem to have the power to keep Canelo off him. You could see the size and strength difference pretty clearly.

Canelo wasn’t maybe as explosive as he used to be, some folks said that, but he was effective. Methodical. Walking Charlo down, landing the harder shots, especially to the body. There were moments Charlo landed clean, but they didn’t seem to faze Canelo much.

The biggest moment was probably that knockdown in the 7th round. Canelo landed a solid right, and Charlo took a knee. He got up, showed heart, but it felt like that really sealed the deal if it wasn’t already heading that way. It just showed Canelo’s power was still very real at 168.

After the Bell

It went the full 12 rounds, and honestly, the decision was obvious. Canelo won, unanimous decision. No surprises there. He just controlled the fight from start to finish, pretty much.

My takeaway? Well, Charlo was brave for taking the fight, jumping up two weights like that against someone like Canelo is a massive ask. He just couldn’t implement his game plan effectively. The power and size difference was too much. He survived, which is something, but he never really threatened Canelo.

For Canelo, it was another day at the office, almost. A solid, dominant win. Maybe not his most spectacular performance ever, but he did what he needed to do against a smaller, skilled champion. Showed he’s still the man at 168.

Overall, the whole process, from doing the research to watching the fight live, was pretty cool. Even though the fight itself wasn’t exactly a nail-biting war, understanding the context and seeing it unfold made it a worthwhile experience. It definitely wasn’t a waste of a Saturday night.
