Okay, so I’ve been seeing this “vision quest in the desert” thing pop up, tied to Dirk Nowitzki, and I was like, “What’s that all about?” I’m a huge Dirk fan, always have been, so I gotta check this out. I figured I’d do my own little version, my own… journey, I guess.

Not quite a desert desert, but you know, close enough.

My Prep Work

First, I needed to figure out what this whole vision quest thing even is. Seems like it’s about getting away from everything, finding some quiet, and just… thinking. Reflecting. Figuring stuff out. I decided to go to the park.

The “Journey”

  • Packed a bag: Water, because, duh. A notebook and pen, in case any brilliant thoughts popped up. And, of course, a basketball. It wouldn’t be a Dirk-inspired quest without one, right?
  • Found my spot: There’s this secluded area in a big park, I go off the trail, and find some rocks, and it’s pretty chill. Not exactly the vast emptiness of the desert, but it’s quiet, and that’s what matters.
  • Started thinking: Okay, this was the hard part. What am I even supposed to be thinking about? I started with basketball, naturally. My own game, what I could improve. Then, it kind of drifted to other stuff… work, life, the usual.
  • Took notes: Every so often, I’d jot something down. Nothing earth-shattering, just little observations, ideas. It felt good to get it out of my head and onto paper.
  • Shot some hoops: After a while, I needed a break from all the thinking. I found a nearby court and just shot around. Practiced my fadeaway, naturally. It felt… meditative, in a way. Just the rhythm of the ball, the swish of the net.

The Result

Did I have some major epiphany? Not really. But I did feel… calmer. More centered. Like I’d cleared out some of the mental clutter. And I realized a few things about my jump shot that I need to work on. I practiced all the time, the rhythm, the repetition, and the feeling of the ball on my fingertips. The key is balance, and the follow-through.

So, was it a real vision quest? Maybe not. But it was something. And it definitely made me appreciate Dirk even more. The guy was dedicated, on and off the court. It’s all about finding your own way, your own “desert,” I guess.
