Curious: How many pars at the 2022 Masters? Find out!

Okay, so yesterday I was messing around trying to figure out something kinda specific: how many pars were made in the 2022 Masters Tournament. Sounds simple, right? Turns out, digging up that exact number is a bit of a journey.

First, I started with what I thought would be the obvious move: the official Masters website. I figured they’d have all the stats, broken down every which way. I spent a good chunk of time clicking through leaderboards, player stats, tournament summaries… Nada. Plenty of info on birdies, eagles, and bogeys, but just a big ol’ goose egg when it came to total pars.

Next, I tried some general golf stats sites. You know, the ones that track all kinds of golf data. I punched in “2022 Masters Tournament Stats” and started sifting through results. Again, lots of general info, but nothing that just flat-out said “X number of pars were made.” It was getting a little frustrating, I’m not gonna lie.

Then I thought, “Okay, let’s get a little more targeted.” I started searching for individual player scorecards from the tournament. The idea was, if I could find a bunch of those, I could manually count the pars for each player and then add ’em all up. Tedious? Absolutely. But at this point, I was kinda invested.

So I found a site that had round-by-round scorecards for a bunch of players. I started with the top finishers, figuring they’d have played the most rounds. I opened up a spreadsheet and started entering the number of pars each player made per round. Round 1: Player A had X pars, Player B had Y pars… and so on. It was slow going!

After doing that for a while, I started to think, “There HAS to be a better way.” All this manual counting was a killer. I needed to think smarter, not harder.

That’s when it hit me: Maybe I could find a site that breaks down each hole individually. If I could find a hole-by-hole breakdown for the entire tournament, I could see how many times each hole was played to par.

I went back to the search engine and tried something like “2022 Masters Hole Stats.” And bingo! I finally found a site that had exactly what I was looking for. It listed each hole and the percentage of times it was played to par, birdie, bogey, etc. This was the jackpot!

Now, it wasn’t a perfect solution. The site gave percentages, not raw numbers. But I knew how many total rounds were played in the tournament (it’s public knowledge). So, I could take each hole’s “par percentage,” multiply it by the total number of times that hole was played, and get a pretty good estimate of the number of pars on that hole. Then I just had to add up those estimates for all 18 holes.

I did the math (using a calculator, of course – I’m not a masochist). It wasn’t perfectly precise because of the rounding of the percentages, but I ended up with a pretty solid estimate. After crunching all the numbers, I got roughly 2200 pars were made in the 2022 Masters Tournament.

So, yeah, that was my little data-diving adventure. It took way longer than I expected, but hey, I learned a few things along the way. Plus, now I can impress my friends with my random golf trivia knowledge. Worth it!
