Well, let me tell you somethin’ about that Braves mascot. You know, the one they got down there in Atlanta. They call him Homer. Homer the Brave, ain’t that somethin’? Sounds like that song they sing, you know the one. He showed up around ’89, I reckon. Before him, they had another one, what was his name… Rally? Yeah, that’s it, Rally. He took over from that first fella, Chief Noc-A-Homa. That was his name.
Now, that Chief, he was somethin’ else. Real name, Levi Walker. He was with them Braves from ’66 to ’86. Long time, huh? I heard he passed on, went to a better place. His family said somethin’ about it on that Facebook thing. Said he was dancin’ in the sky, no more pain. Good for him, I say.
This whole Braves thing, it goes way back. They started up in Boston, way up north. Back in 1871, they was called the Boston Red Stockings. Can you believe it? Red Stockings! They one of the oldest teams around, been playin’ longer than anyone else in North America, they say.
- Boston Braves, that’s what they was called later.
- Played there in Boston till 1952.
- Then they moved to Milwaukee. Milwaukee Braves, they became.
- Finally, in ’66, they landed in Atlanta.
That Braves mascot, Chief Noc-A-Homa, he was the main one for a long time. Even when they was in Milwaukee, he was their mascot. He was the first one everybody thinks of when you say “Atlanta Braves”. That name and logo, it comes from way back, from Milwaukee, and even before that, from Boston. It’s been passed down like an old quilt, you see.
Now, I heard some folks ain’t too happy with that logo they got now. Some kinda axe, they call it a tomahawk. Red one. They been usin’ it since 2018, I think. Some people don’t like it, but they ain’t changed it. They say it is controversial logo. Not sure what that means but it sounds like trouble.
That Chief Noc-A-Homa, though, he was somethin’. I remember seein’ him on the TV, all dressed up. He was a symbol, you know? Part of the whole show. The original mascot of the team. He was a big deal in his time, that’s for sure.
They got all kinds of stories about him, and pictures and them movin’ pictures, videos, they call ’em. Even them things called podcasts, though I don’t rightly know what those are.
